Description: Carte-de-visite photograph of two unhappy children by J.W. Black of Newport, Rhode Island, circa 1863. The unidentified portrait view shows two well dressed children posing for their likeness in a photographic studio. The girl wears a light colored and sits on a stool of sorts, as her younger brother sits on the floor and leans against her, his elbow in her lap. He wears a light colored outfit, and the straw boater in his sister’s lap must belong to him. Note the tied back curtain and painted backdrop behind them. The painting seems to feature a lake, and there are deer in the background. Black’s gallery was located on Touro Street, close by the U.S. Naval Academy, which was located at Newport during the years of the Civil War. The carte-de-visite is in good to very good condition with minimal wear and soiling. The corners of the card have been neatly clipped. The photograph exhibits good to very good tonal range and shows good to very good detail. A nice early image of wealthy children in Newport RI!
