Description: Original 1861 hand signed “Ten Cents” note issued by the “County of Augusta” in Staunton, Virginia. It has the plain back with the hand inscribed serial number “21418” in red ink. These smaller type fractional notes or “emergency script” were issued by most of the southern states and even northern businesses. During the Civil War the hoarding of copper, silver and gold (Hard Cash) resulted in little coinage in circulation. The only way to “make change” was to issue these type notes. Original Civil War bullets excavated on the Chancellorsville Battlefield near Fredericksburg, Virginia. The .44 caliber at left would have been used with the Army Model Colt or Remington revolvers. The unfired Federal .58 three ring was standard issue for the Springfield Rifle or other contract and imported arms of that caliber. Many of the bullets found on the battlefields are unfired for a variety of reasons. The paper cartridge which held the powder may have broken in their cartridge box, the paper could be wet or they just dropped it in the leaves while loading and just pulled another out. The .69 round ball was issued for the 1842 Models of .69 smoothbore muskets used by both sides. They all used a paper cartridge; the white color is due to oxidation in the ground. The Battle of Chancellorsville was fought from April 30 to May 6, 1863, near the village of Chancellorsville. Two related battles were fought nearby on May 3 in the vicinity of Fredericksburg. The campaign pitted Union Army Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker's “Army of the Potomac” against an army less than half its size, General Robert E. Lee's Confederate “Army of Northern Virginia”. They are mounted in a 6” x 8” Riker style case with glass front. The artifacts are just pressed in, we don’t glue them in. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. The documents pictured will also come with the set. Please see our "About” on front page for more information on the framing and artifacts.
