The book is profusely illustrated by the author. Illustrations include the striking frontispiece of wild horses. Ramón Páez (1810 - 1894) was a Venezuelan writer, educated in England, son of Venezuelan general José Antonio Páez (leader of the movement that separated Venezuela from Greater Colombia).
