1860 - Eastern & Central Europe. Antique Map Schnitzler

Description: 1860 - antique map by Schnitzlerantique map, 1860, by Jean-Henri Schnitzler, by E. Simon (Strasbourg). Map double, folded in two, formerly mounted on a tab. Titled: "Eastern Europe in the second half of the 15th century". This antique map represents Eastern Europe, sometimes also called European Russia or Central Europe, from Poland to the Urals. The different political entities of the time are indicated.Jean-Henri Schnitzler, born in Strasbourg in 1802, was a great Alsatian historian, keen on statistics. A professor in Russia for almost 5 years, he knows this region perfectly and was the author of numerous works on this Empire. His maps demonstrate his love of history and statistics: they contain a large amount of information, most often historical, but remain simple and easy to read.Dimensions: 37cm x 56cmSome stains, foxing, paper with yellow patina, missing upper right corner. Usual defects of geographical maps of this period. Please look at the pictures.Central Europe is the region extending into the heart of the European continent. It designates a space whose vague and variable contours do not always coincide with the borders of the countries concerned. According to definitions, varying according to both authors and eras, five to twenty-one current states can be considered central European. Beyond strictly geographical considerations, Central Europe designates a group sharing a common historical trajectory, which has shaped a unique cultural and political heritage. Central Europe is characterised, like any territorial concept, as much by its intrinsic particularities as by its opposition to other territories. The easternmost region of the “Christian West”, it was lastingly marked in the 16th century by the Protestant Reformation and its consequences. Although influenced by German-speaking peoples, it is also characterized by great linguistic and cultural diversity. This can be explained by the population dynamics which saw Slavic, Finno-Ugric, Roman, Baltic, Germanic, Jewish and Roma peoples settle there. Moreover, this area has long been dominated by supranational states, whether the Holy Roman Empire, the Austrian Empire, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth or, to a lesser extent, the Russian or Ottoman empires.Professional in the sale (and passion) of historical and geographical engravings, I will ship your purchase with the greatest care as I myself would like to receive it.
