Description: This listing is for perhaps the best known pre-civil war printing of "A Visit From St. Nicholas," dated 1858. The two page spread features a very early illustration by FOC Darley showing St. Nicholas climbing into a chimney. It was Darley who created the images of Santa Claus that we have become familiar with today and no doubt inspired the artwork of Thomas Nast. The book itself contains over 800 pages of diverse articles from the mid-1800s. It's broad distribution at the time was no doubt instrumental in popularizing the poem. A wonderful historic piece that you can spend hours perusing! The book measures approximately 7 x 9 inches. Construction is hardcover, floral paper litho over boards with a leather spine and corners. At 166 years old, the book is in excellent condition overall. The covers show moderate wear, mostly to the corners. Pages are clean and binding is tight. "A Visit from St. Nicholas" appears on pages 1 and 2. On consignment. Thanks for looking! Please CLICK HERE for more vintage Christmas books Thanks for looking! Powered by WonderLister Desktop App
