Description: 1857/1861 CDV Alfred Lord Tennyson, James Mudd, Anthony Pub, Mathew Brady National Portrait Gallery Description Photographer_________ James Mudd, Published by E&HT Anthony from photographic negative in Brady’s National Portrait Gallery Title: Lord Alfred Tennyson Date: 1857-1861 Medium: Carte-de-visite on printed mount Size of Image: na Size of Mount: 3 7/8 x 2 3/8 inches Condition: Rich tonal image shows light aging, bottom edge trimmed, penciled notations front/back Other: Uncommon CDV portrait of Alfred Lord Tennyson by English photographer James Mudd. Published by E. & H.T. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York. The credit on the back reads, “From Photographic Negative in Brady’s National Portrait Gallery.” Anthony acquired and published many of Mathew Brady’s photographs from his National Portrait Gallery collection. Evidently, as was common at the time, Brady must have licensed (or pirated?) the Mudd portrait. This particular portrait can also be found on mounts published by George C. Rockwood (NY), Gindall & Co. (London), and John G. Murdoch (London), it is often confused with a similar portrait credited to Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). James Mudd (1821-1906) was a prolific and important British photographer from Manchester perhaps best known for his industrial photographs of locomotives. He began as an amateur about 1850 and is noted with his brother Richard Mudd in the 1852 Manchester Trades Directory. They appear to have gone their separate ways by 1861 and by 1871 he is listed as J. Mudd & Son (James Willis Mudd). The business was acquired in 1895 by employee George Grundy who maintained the J. Mudd & Sons at least until 1900 becoming G. Grundy & Sons following James Mudd’s death in 1906. Mudd was a noted landscape photographer early in his career receiving many accolades for his work in the photographic salons of the day. As was common at this time, Mudd pursued the carte-de-visite market for noted personalities which was the staple of many studios and galleries in the mid 19th Century. Mudd’s employee George Wardley is said to have assisted in the portraiture produced at this time. Mudd also was an accomplished painter often using his photographic images as inspiration and reference to his works. Send questions. We are currently listing a diverse selection of items.
