Description: RARE 1856 GERMAN LANGUAGE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN LITERATURE: WE WILL VOTE FOR BUCHANAN!WAS ERHEISCHT DAS DEUTSCHE INTERESSE BEI DER NÄCHSTEN PRÄSIDENTENWAHL UND WIE SOLLEN DIE DEUTSCHEN STIMMEN ? [What is German interest in the next presidential election and how should Germans vote ?]. [United States]: [No Publisher], [1856]. First edition, text entirely in German. A rare piece of James Buchanan presidential campaign literature aimed at newly arrived German immigrants. Single sheet, folded twice to form 8 pages (c. 10 x 6 inches), uncut and unopened. This pamphlet presents a sophisticated argument for why German immigrants should vote for James Buchanan in the 1856 presidential election. Text begins: What does the German interest require in the German presidential election and how should the Germans vote? Our first duty as Germans is to remain true to ourselves. Our second duty is to keep in mind the best interests of the whole Union, of our whole adopted fatherland, and the third duty is that we do nothing here that could harm our old fatherland, Germany and its aspirations for freedom. We want to take a closer look at the three duties in practice… Colonel Fremont is thus in fact, not merely theoretically, the candidate of the Know-nothings, Temperancers, abolitionists, and black Republicans. Fillmore and Fremont are both Know-nothings, only Fillmore is a Temperancer and abolitionist… They wanted to transplant the holocaust that destroyed our old fatherland here and thereby poison this great, aspiring federal state… The free states of the North are more populous and richer than the southern slave states, and there are more northern than southern territories from which free states must be formed. Where the climate is such that the free labor of the white man can compete with the labor of the negro, slavery will not take root, for no one speculates on his own profit, or pursues that which brings him profit. The alleged evils of Kansas will cure themselves; but a breach of faith in the Union, or in the Constitution, will have an effect forever… James Buchanan of Pennsylvania grew up in Pennsylvania among Germans and descendants of Germans and has fought manfully against nativism and know-nothingism at all times from the beginning to the present. He is no fanatic, no temperance man, no idiot, he belongs only to the numerous peasant tribes who now stand under the most colorful flags and colors in the Fremont camp. Buchanan is a statesman into whose hands we can confidently place the supreme leadership of the government of our adopted fatherland. We will vote for Buchanan! Text makes several references to the Kansas-Nebraska act, and the role slavery is playing in the election. It also makes several references to “Negroes,” drawing comparisons between them and German immigrants. Very good condition for such a fragile, ephemeral publication. Moderate wear at extremities, bit of marginal worming, thin chipping, few short tears. Text is clean and sound. A rare pamphlet– OCLC locates only a single holding, at NYPL.
