Description: Fully titled and subtitled, Arctic Explorations: The Second Grinnell Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin, 1853, '54, '55. Authored by Elizabeth Kent Kane, FIRST EDITION with both books having title page dates of 1856, published by Childs and Peterson. Overall in VERY GOOD CONDITION. The original cloth boards with embossed decoration on front and rear boards, and gilt titling on spine, have both been professionally refurbished to now show very clean, solid, and presentable books - see listing photos. The interiors of both books are very clean and solidly bound. Brown endpapers, both books, not cracked. A previous store stamp behind front board of both volumes - it is the same stamp so these were always together as a pair. A previous owner signed his name and date (1857) on a blank free endpaper of Vol 2 (see listing photo). Vol. 1 has an advertisement before anything else about a book, Brazil and the Brazilians. All plates present with tissue protection, VERY LITTLE FOXING THROUGHOUT BOTH VOLUMES. There is only faint foxing on some of the plates in Vol 1, and light foxing on several of the plates in Vol 2. There are 18 engraved plates after J. Hamilton, 2 maps, 1 of which being folding (Chart Exhibiting the Discoveries of the Second American Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin ), a folding isothermal chart of Baffin Bay, and numerous woodcut engravings in the text. Volume 1 has 464 pages, Volume 2 has 467 pages. Brief overview found online: "The search for the remains of the polar expedition of Sir John Franklin was to lead to far greater information on the Arctic than could have been gleaned from the original expedition, even if it had been successful in navigating the Northwest Passage. The series of fine steel-engraved plates shows a captivating variety of Arctic scenes. « Kane was the commander of the Advance on this expedition, also financed by Henry Grinnell. Although Franklin was not found, the explorers were able to gather much information about the people, geography, and natural science of the region » " SL.
