Description: Item up for sale is a fantastic pre Civil War copy of The Life of Horace Greeley. Civil War buffs are certainly familiar with the name and his connection to Lincoln. Political buffs know of his part in the founding of the Republican Party and his short stint in the U.S. House of Representatives and historians of business and the press know him as the Editor of the New York Tribune. Book was published in 1855 by the Mason Brothers of New York with the book dedicated to the "Young men of the Free States". Interior of the front cover shows some old pencil written markings. Pages (including pre title illustrations) show foxing / brown spotting / discoloration to the paper with pages as a whole showing yellowing from age and use. Hinge paper on interior covers show some wear and splitting. Cover boards show patina and surface wear from age with spots of surface discoloration and soiling. Corners and edges show age and use appropriate corner wear. Butt and crown of spine show some wear and tear. Item has 442 numbered pages with the last page having a handwritten date in pencil that we believe is when a previous owner finished the book in 1911. Back of the book (blank page) shows a small tear along the bottom edge as you can see in photos. Cover and spine show gold gilt. Book measures 7-5/8" top to bottom by 5-1/4" wide by 1-1/4" in depth. Amazing book that comes fresh to the market. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. We are pleased to offer a 14 day, no questions asked return policy.
