Description: [Natural History] ~ WITH A PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF THE AUTHOR [JAMES, Thomas] The honey bee. Reprinted from the 'Quarterly Review' London. John Murray, 1852. . 8vo. [4], 99pp, [1]. [Bound after:] JAMES, Thomas. The history and antiquities of northamptonshire. London. John Murray, 1864. iv, 103pp, [1]. [And:] [JAMES, Thomas]. The flower garden. With an essay on the poetry of gardening. London. John Murray, 1852. 108pp. 8vo. Handsomely presented in richly gilttooled green calf, with the titles of the works lettered in gilt to upper board. Marbled endpapers and edges. With an albumen photographic portrait (presumably of the author) tipped to blank flyleaf opposite the title of the first bound (second mentioned) work. Slightly rubbed to extremities, else a crisp copy. Inscribed 'The Rev. Ellis Everett. With very kind regards from E.J. Theddingworth, November 10th 1886' to blank flyleaf at front. A collection of three works by Eton educated Thomas James (180963), sometime assistant master at Charterhouse, and later rector of Theddingworth, better known for his translation of Aesop's Fables (London, 1848). All are reprinted from appearances in the Quarterly Review. The Honey Bee, with frequent reference to works of classical and modern literature (including a quote attributed to Byron ('Sweet is the hum of bees') is complete with numerous facts and figures relating to Bees in their natural habitat, in addition to providing a survey of the contemporary literature of beekeeping. The inclusion in this copy of a photographic portrait of a man sat on a decidedly inside chair, reading a book outside, and the inscription mentioning Theddingworth, suggests that this was at least a family copy, if not the author's own. ~ About Antiquates We’re based in the heart of the Dorset countryside, with an antiquarian bookshop in Wareham, housed within a beautiful Grade II Listed Georgian Building, we also travel far and wide to buy, sell and advise on rare books.
