Description: PRINTS BOOKS PHOTOGRAPHS MANUSCRIPTS CURIOSITIES - RARE RAILWAYANA - HAND-COLOURED CHARTS OF UP TO 4 METRES OR MORE IN LENGTH-LA COMPAGNIE DES CHEMINS DE FER DE PARIS A LYON ET A LA MEDITERRANEE (PLM, one of the largest private French railway companies, in existence from its creation in 1857 until its nationalization in 1938. Serving the south-east of France, and in particular the Côte d'Azur, Provence, the Cévennes and the Alps, the PLM was considered the company par excellence for holiday departures. The PLM's Parisian station was the Gare de Lyon.).A rare collection of original land aquisition maps and documents related to the building of the PLM railway from Paris to Lyon and the Mediterranean, circa 1850s. [1] 8 printed documents with numerous contemporary maunscript entries, relating to the acquisition of land and other property along the proposed route of the Privas branch of the PLM railway, including the communes of Lavoulte (16pp); St. Priest (4pp); Pouzin (24pp); Privas (16pp); D'Alissas (12pp); Rompon (8pp); Baix (8pp); St. Lager-Bressac (8pp). The forms gives the names of land owners, type of property being purchased, prices asked for and actual prices realised, the latter given in manuscript alongside other maunscript notes in a column titled 'Observations'. Presumably all printed in Lyon, one with printer's details 'Ph. Guiremand, Imp. du chemin de fer.' The documents are undated but the Privas branch line was built in the 1850s.[2] 8 long fold-out hand-coloured charts showing detailed sections of the Privas branch, with areas highlighted in yellow, purple and red to show the land railway route 'chemins donnes', land bought amicably 'terrains acquis a l'amiable' and land not yet purchased 'terrains non acquis'. Most of the charts extend to a considerable length, the longest being approx. 430cm (x 31cm in width).Very Good to Good condition. Generally well-preserved. Some scattered creasing and occasional handling marks. A couple of charts with short closed tears. Minimal age-toning. Some contemporary pencil doodles and markings to a few covers. A few minor mis-folds. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely. A fascinating collection of documents and long fold-out charts relating to the acquisition of land along the route of the proposed Paris-Lyon railway, in particular the Privas branch line. The forms - of which there are a total of 8 - have numerous manuscript insertions detailing the deals done by the PLM management company with local residents to purchase land so that the railway could be built. The hand-coloured charts - of which there are also a total of 8, most of which are very long - show the progress of land acquisition and what tracts of land have still not been bought. The documents are undated but we believe are from the 1850s, when the majority of land purchases took place. key words:
