He was the eldest child of US Vice President John Caldwell Calhoun and Floride Bonneau Colhoun Calhoun, and named after Revolutionary War hero General Andrew Pickens, his maternal uncle by marriage. He was educated at South Carolina College and Yale University. He married his cousin, Eugenia Chappell, and after her death, he married Margaret Green on May 5, 1836. After his marriage to Margaret, he began purchasing land in Marengo County, Alabama. He commenced a cotton plantation known as Tulip Hill, which was expanded by the purchase of neighboring Cuba plantation. In 1854,he purchased Fort Hill plantation at Clemson, South Carolina from his mother Floride Calhoun. She held a mortgage over the property. After Andrew's death in 1865, Floride foreclosed on the Mortgage against Andrew's heirs shortly prior to her death in July 1866. After protracted legal proceedings, Fort Hill was auctioned in 1872. Floride's executor purchased the property at the auction and divided it amongst Floride's surviving heirs. Andrew Pickens Calhoun died of congestive heart failure. --- --SEE PHOTOS !!!
