Description: THIS IS ONLY A SMALL PART OF A LARGER COLLECTION OF ENGRAVINGS THAT WERE PUBLISHED WITH THE GENERAL TITLE, "The Ports, Harbours, Watering-places, and Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain. Illustrated by Views Taken on the Spot." This larger book was issued around 1844 - no precise dates provided in Worldcat or otherwise; the commonly assumed date is 1844. This original version was published in 2 volumes, and the various listings I can find online (including Worldcat) have different numbers of engravings noted - one indicated 120 engravings, another 124, and still another, 144 engravings. THIS SLIM VOLUME ONLY HAS 24 engravings. It seems possible that, if the original version had 120 engravings, this particular book would have been one of 5 volumes. The spine has the title, "The Ports and Harbours of Great Britain. Div. III. 7/6". The original books, as provided online by Gutenberg, indicate that there is a title page, but after that the book launches into engravings with no introductory material. There is no title page in this book. Finally, the compilation of engravings in this selection does not match the order of engravings in Vol 1 and 2 of the Gutenberg listing. The first engraving in this book, Sidmouth View From the Beach, is in the middle of Volume 2, while the second engraving, Dundee From the Opposite Side of the Tay, is found in Volume 1. Each engraving has a tissue protective sheet, the engraving, and then a 1-2 page description of the scene. The book is in GOOD CONDITION. Green cloth boards with gilt front board decoration and spine titling. Parts of the spine are missing - see listing photo. The book is solidly bound, all tissues present, there is light to moderate foxing on the engravings, mostly only around the edges missing the image, but the foxing has encroached on a few of the engravings - one shown in listing photo as an example.
