Description: Principles of Geology: or, the Modern Changes of the Earth and its Inhabitants, considered as illustrative of geology. By Charles Lyell. In Three Volumes. Reprinted from the Sixth English Edition. Boston: Hilliard, Gray 1842. The second American edition (the first authorized, after the 1837 pirated US edition). Complete with frontispiece and 11 further plates. Three volume set. Although the volumes are all the same edition and in similar condition, Vol. II appears to have been matched with the others, as the binding is somewhat different and the ownership inscriptions are also different. Chipping to spine tips, corners bumped/worn through, parts of Vol. 1 bottom edges worn through, top inch of Vol. 1 front join split, some foxing to textblock edges. Pages lightly yellowed with sporadic foxing, minor blemishes. Vol. 3 endpapers show a little dampstain. Vol. 1 binding cracked at front; front cover and spine hanging on to textblock by the threads. Otherwise bindings reasonably firm. A few owner names. Apart from the weak Vol. 1 binding, Good plus/VG minus.
