Some of these, written by residents of 100 to 150years ago, flesh out the dry bones of the history books withdetails of everyday living in our north country communities.*era1 of these letters were addressed to the same man,and in one case had copies of his replies. He was WilliamH. Harison (note that spelling), Counselor at Law, ChambersSt, New York City. He must have been well known becauseall but one are addressed simply to "William H. Harison,Esq., New York. Even in the 1836-45 period of these lettersthis seems like an inadequate address.Apparently Mr. Harison was a Proprietor (owner or representing the owners) of considerable land in the county. Houghshistory lists a Richard Harrison as ownig nearly 40,000 acres in the eastern part of Canton and Lisbon in 1805,and notes that Morley was named for some of his relativesin 1835, after starting out as Long Rapids.One of the letters is written by a brother, Francis L.Harison, who lived in Canton, and four by Roswell Greenwho is listed by Hough as the first Warden of Grace Episcopal Church, established there in 1836.
