A scarce set of pamphlets commemorating anniversary of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. Charted in 1638 as a volunteer militia and training organization, it is the oldest chartered military organization in the United States and the third oldest in the world. Due to military modernization and the creation of the United States and Massachusetts National Guard, the Company shifted to historic preservation by the turn of the 20th Century, although it remains the ceremonial honor guard of the Governor of Massachusetts. Samuel Kirkland Lothrop (1804-1886) was an American clergyman and minister of the Brattle Street Church in Boston. Otis A. Skinner served as pastor of the Fifth Universalist Church in Boston.
