The author, Joseph Strutt (1749-1802), was an English engraver, artist, antiquary and writer. According to Sir Rory Strong in "And When Did You Last See Your Father? The Victorian Painter and British History," Strutt was the earliest and "most important single figure in the investigation of the costume of the past," earning him distinction as "an influential but totally neglected figure in the history of art in Britain." "Sports and Pastimes" is his final work, following a number of books on English antiquities, costume, and art. Book is quarter-bound in black leather with leather tips. Spine has gold lettering and gold ornamentation. Covers firmly attached with no cracking or splitting of leather. All pages are clean and tightly bound with virtually no foxing. The book shows a bit of general wear but remains in very good condition. Previous owner wriiten note on front flyleaf stating that he received this book from Professor Andrew J. Sobol of Brown University. It is signed by T Bruce Boyden. This is quite a rare book in very nice condition! Would make a super addition to a collection! Great gift idea!
