Contemporary with Samuel Pepys, Evelyn's diary have comparatively fallen out of favour, and yet they offer a great insight into the sociopolitical climate of the 17th century, and comments on the notable incidents of the century. This particular volume features Evelyn's miscellaneous writings. With additional material and notes by the notable librarian and collector William Upcott. Collated complete with 4 plates. One of which is a facsimile of a letter sent by Evelyn to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Thomas Tennison. CONDITION In a half cloth binding, with paper covered boards. Externally sound. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and also to the extremities. Light rubbing the joints. Heavier rubbing to the front and rear boards. Offsetting to the front board. Tape repairs to the front and rear hinge. Age toning to the fore edge. Offsetting to the front and rear pastedowns and endpaper, alongside the odd handling mark. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned to the extremities. The odd small closed tears to the extremities of several pages. Odd instances of foxing and spotting to several pages, heavier to the first and last pages. Light cockling to several pages, mostly to the last few pages. Overall Condition: Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.
