SEE PHOTO----- COMPLETE, ORIGINAL NEWSPAPER, the American Patriot (Portland, MAINE) dated in 1825. This newspaper was delivered to, and owned by, HENRY CLAY when he was the Secretary of State in the John Quincy Adams Presidential administration. The newspaper contains Henry Clay's name prominently written in brown iron gall ink in the blank margin at the top of the newspaper. This newspaper was delivered to, and thus owned by, Clay when he was secretary of State in the JQ Adams administration. Clay's name was not written by Henry Clay himself but should be thought of an early 19th century "mailing address label" of sorts for delivery purposes to him. After his election as President in 1824, John Q Adams offered Henry Clay the position of Secretary of State, which Clay accepted, despite fears that he would be accused of trading his support for the Cabinet post. Andrew Jackson was outraged by the election, and he and his supporters accused Clay and Adams of having reached a "Corrupt Bargain." Pro-Jackson forces immediately began preparing for the 1828 presidential election, with the Corrupt Bargain accusation becoming their central issue. The exact date of this newspaper in 1825 with Henry Clay's name written in brown iron gall ink at the top will be selected at random from our small inventory of this newspaper. Very good condition. This listing includes the complete entire original newspaper, NOT just a clipping or a page of it. STEPHEN A.
