Description: "Sussex, Surrey."A genuine antique map taken from a description of Britain by M. G-B. Depping titled "L'Angleterre, ou Description Historique et Topographique du Royaume-Uni de la Grande - Bretagne" first published in 1824, Paris, Chez Etienne Ledoux. From a set of county maps that are hardly significant cartographically speaking, but which have always been popular for their exquisite design. Each map incorporates features from the counties depicted - perhaps associated industries and manufactured goods, or historical figures or events. A unique miniature set of county maps. The maps were designed by Aristide Michel Perrot (1793 - 1879) who published a large number of maps in France. The set was engraved by Adrien Migneret (1786 - 1840). There is some confusion over the sex of Migneret. The imprint bottom right is clearly Me. Migneret, which to some suggests Madame. In fact, I believe this stands for 'Maitre' (in the sense of Master Engraver?). The British Museum clearly states he is male, and his names Adrien Jacques Antoine suggest this to be correct! On this map Brighton is marked as 'Brighthelmestone'. The border colouring is original, done by hand. The industries acknowledged include canons (the iron industry in the Weald), sheep, and maybe map-making/ triangulation (the ordnance survey had recently surveyed Sussex)? I am selling others from the set on ebay - please see my other items. Size: the sheet measures approx. 15.5cms x 10cms.Condition: Rough down left-hand edge where removed from the book. A little staining around the edges, but generally in a good condition. Please study the photographs. Postage: £2.50 within the UK, £8.00, rest of the world.I have other antique maps, books, prints etc. in my ebay shop - please see my other items.
