Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Ragley Park, Warwickshire." DATE PRINTED: 1823, dated on the print. SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 13 x 10.5 cm, 5.25 x 4.25 inches (small) plus margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by Thomas Matthews (British, active c.1815-1822)from an original study by John Preston Neale. John Preston Neale (1780–1847) was an English architectural and landscape draughtsman. Much of his work was drawn, although he produced the occasional watercolour or oil painting. His drawings were used on a regular basis by engravers. PROVENANCE: Published in “Views Of The Seats Of Noblemen And Gentlemen, In England, Wales, Scotland, And Ireland First Series." Neale, J. P. Published in London. The first series commenced in 1818 and was followed by a second series in 1824. A final and more common re-issue occurred in 1829-1831 in which many of the earlier plates were re-touched. The images from the earlier series are sharper and more desirable. TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good, suitable for framing. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Ragley Hall in the parish of Arrow in Warwickshire is a stately home, located south of Alcester and eight miles (13 km) west of Stratford-upon-Avon. It is the ancestral seat of the Seymour-Conway family, Marquesses of Hertford. The house was built by Edward Conway, 1st Earl of Conway (1623–1683) to the designs of William Hurlbert, with modifications by Robert Hooke and was completed after his death in 1683.[1] The interior was subsequently modified on at least three occasions, to the designs of James Gibbs circa 1750–56; of James Wyatt circa 1778–83 and of William Tasker circa 1871–73.
