London Bridge - 1209 (rebuilt 1820...The Roman invasion of Britain around 400 A.D. resulted in a small settlement in and around the Thames which they called 'Londinium.' They built a succession of wooden bridges over the river which were always collapsing because of tidal changes. Ferries would then replace the destroyed bridges. Londonium vanished without trace - as far as historical records go - in 457 A.D. In the 12th Century a London Bridge of stone was constructed and then rebuilt in 1263 following a fire. In the 19th Century the bridge collapsed ("London Bridge is Falling Down...") and a new bridge replaced it (photo above).Photo measures 10.25 x 8 inches. Photo is dated --1820.
