1816 - L France Gold 40 Francs Louis XVIII NGC AU DETAILS - BEAUTIFUL LARGE GOLD

Description: This super pretty large size gold coin of France ( nearly 750.00 of melt value of gold at current spot levels) with a stunning appearance. While it has been cleaned in the past (perhaps more than a century ago) it certainly is not harshly cleaned as is evident from the photos here in the listing. It will certainly be a welcomed addition to any collection of fine gold coins from France. A real prize! Louis XVIII, whose full name was Louis Stanislas Xavier, was a monarch who served as the King of France from 1814 to 1824. He was a member of the House of Bourbon and was born on November 17, 1755. Louis XVIII's reign is significant in the context of French history as it followed the tumultuous period of the French Revolution, the Napoleonic era, and the Bourbon Restoration. Key points about Louis XVIII of France: Brother of Louis XVI: Louis XVIII was the younger brother of King Louis XVI. During the French Revolution, he lived in exile in various European countries as the revolutionaries abolished the monarchy. Return to France: After the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte and the First French Empire, the Bourbon monarchy was restored with the arrival of Louis XVIII in France in 1814. This period is known as the Bourbon Restoration. Charter of 1814: Louis XVIII accepted a constitutional monarchy with the Charter of 1814. This charter established a constitutional framework for the government, acknowledging some of the principles of the French Revolution. Hundred Days: Louis XVIII's reign faced a setback during the Hundred Days when Napoleon briefly returned to power in 1815. After Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, Louis XVIII was restored to the throne. Congress of Vienna: Louis XVIII participated in the Congress of Vienna in 1814-1815, where the major European powers redrew the map of Europe and sought to restore stability after the Napoleonic Wars. Conservative Rule: Louis XVIII's reign was characterized by a more conservative approach to governance, seeking to balance royal authority with constitutional principles. The monarchy was less absolute than before the revolution. Death and Succession: Louis XVIII died on September 16, 1824. He was succeeded by his younger brother, Charles X. Legacy: Louis XVIII's reign is often seen as a period of relative stability after the upheavals of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era. However, the Bourbon Restoration did not fully satisfy all factions in French society, leading to future political changes. Louis XVIII's reign marked an attempt to reconcile monarchical traditions with the principles of the French Revolution. The challenges faced during his rule set the stage for further political developments in France, including the July Revolution of 1830 that led to the overthrow of the Bourbon monarchy.
