Description: Rare early 19th Century Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving: Edwards Botanical - Double Wide Plate From early volumes of "Edwards's Botanical Register" comes this original hand-colored botanical print signed 'Syd .Edwards del.', indicating that the engraving was made after a painting of this flower by the famed Sydenham Teast Edwards (5 August 1768 – 8 February 1819). The Botanical Register, subsequently known as Edwards's Botanical Register, was an illustrated horticultural magazine that ran from 1815 to 1847. It was started by the botanical illustrator Sydenham Edwards, who had previously illustrated Curtis's The Botanical Magazine, but left after a dispute with the editors. Edwards edited five volumes of The Botanical Register in five years, before his death in 1819. This plate is very scarce. This one is a First Edition print, which are generally very rare. The drawing & coloring is quite stunning. Condition: Very good condition. Size: Approximately 9” x 10” (double wide plate) These prints are very old & may have minor imperfections expected with age, such as some typical age-toning of the paper, oxidation of the old original watercolors, spots, text-offsetting, etc. Please examine the photos & details carefully. Text Page(s): Comes with an original text page when possible.
