A fine, untrimmed copy with newly rebacked in cloth with a paper spine label. Sutcliff was a Quaker merchant from Sheffield who spent several years in America on business. He traveled extensively throughout the areas surrounding Philadelphia as well as Baltimore and New York. His journal incorporates a number of interesting anecdotes concerning black people and their treatment, the Quakers in America, the Indians, and so on. He travelled extensively in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York, spending a good deal of time on both his southern and northern excursions, and giving good accounts of the Genesee country, and of southern slavery, to which he was deeply opposed. Some soiling, page toning, foxing, rebound in leather and marlble, gilt stamped titled and hubbed spine. Binding tight and square. No hand writing or markings inside, no previous owners name. Rough page edges as published. Amazing how so many of the pages are different sizes (some smaller, some larger). 8.5 in x 5 in.
