Description: Charming little volume of plays as presented in with commentary by Mrs. Inchbald (Elizabeth Simpson Inchbald). Inchbald was an actress, playwright, translator and critic in Georgian England whose written works were more well-received than her acting due to a speech impediment. This volume contains five plays, each with commentary including “The Beaux Strategem” by George Farquhar, “Gustavus Vasa” by Henry Brooke, esq, “The West Indian” by Richard Cumberland, esq., “Julius Caesar” by Shakespeare, “Everyone Has His Faults” by Mrs. Inchbald herself. Each claims to be taken from the prompt book(s) and presents not only Mrs. Inchbald’s commentary but a list of cast members and where presented. Each piece also has an illustration. This particular volume has a small mark or stain at the top of the front and is starting to split at the front hinge. Inside is a bookstore stamp in blue from “Bucher Sammlung/Von/Ph. Nathusius” and a bookplate of a swan. Illustrations are intact. There is some foxing and shadowing of the prints on facing pages. An rare treat for the lover of Georgian theater.
