Description: Harriet and Sophia Lee were of that small group of female Georgian writers who met with success and 'Canterbury Tales', published between 1797 and 1805 and modelled on their predecessor Chaucer, is perhaps their best known work. Among Harriet's admirers were Lord Byron and William Godwin, and she also knew Samuel Rogers. These four volumes, with just a small contribution by Sophia, (a fifth was produced later in 1805), consist of 9 stories, related by travellers who are thrown together by an untoward accident.
