Tanguy de La Boissiere, Imprime & se trouve chez Moreau de Saint-Mery, Philadelphie, 1797, 50 pp. French Originals of All The Documents, Translations of Which Accompanied the Message of the President of the United States, of the 18th January, 1799, Relative to the Affairs of the United States with the French Republic, Printed by Charles Cist, Philadelphia, 207 pp. Original leather boards, 8.5 x 5”, 8vo. In good condition. Ex-library of the Pottsville Literary Society J. Keller Burns dated March 13, 1851. A yellow bookseller’s ticket is placed on the pastedown but has since mostly chipped. Light wear to extremities with minor scuffing to corners and end bands. Front board fragile, front gutter tender. Fly is chipped at edges. P.S. Duponceau stamp on title (more information below.) Each leaf has been numbered by hand in old manuscript. Light toning and moderate foxing throughout. Free of known markings other than numeration. Great federal era devices throughout! Binding intact. Please see photos. Peter Stephen Du Ponceau (1760-1844) owned this book and left his stamp mark on the title. Ponceau was a French-American linguist, philosopher, and jurist. After emigrating to the colonies in 1777, he served in the American Revolutionary War. He lived in Philadelphia for the remainder of his years and contributed significantly to the work of indigenous languages of the Americas. He advanced the understandings of written Chinese as well. He helped to build a collection of text that described and recorded native languages. He was one of the first Western linguists to reject the axiomatic classification of Chinese writing as ideographic. This work, published by Charles Cist (the first person to introduce anthracite coal into the United States!) was written at the time of highest tension between France and the U.S. over interference in American trade — the “Quasi War” — the author argues that the U.S. is not being fair to France and is leaning too far toward England. Very Scarce. RAREA1797DORX
