1793 Antique Print; Broad Street, Oxford by Farington / Boydell

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) scarce antique aquatint "View in Broad Street in Oxford." The print is offered with fine, early colouring. A fine original coloured aquatint from Boydell's celebrated "History of The River Thames". A View of the Broad Street from West to East, the old Ashmolean in the middle distance on the right of the road, the Sheldonian Theatre and the Clarendon Building behind, spirelets of the Bodleian Library and the dome of the Radcliff Camera in the right background, four scholars in gowns talking in the left foreground. DATE PRINTED: 1793 (dated on print).SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 33 x 21.5 cm (13 x 8.5 inches) plus margins with a blank back (medium). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Very fine original coloured aquatint. This fine aquatint was drawn by J Farington. R. A, aquatinted by Joseph Constantine Stadler (active 1780-1812) and published by J & J Boydell of London and dated June 1st 1793. Joseph Farington RA (21 November 1747 – 30 December 1821) was an 18th-century English landscape painter and diarist. Born in Leigh, Lancashire, Farington was the second of seven sons of William Farington and Esther Gilbody. After his early education in Manchester, Farington went to study with Richard Wilson in London in 1763. In 1764, 1765, and 1766 he won "premiums" from the Society of Artists for his landscape drawing; he became a member in 1765. He joined the Royal Academy when it was founded in 1769 and was elected an ARA in 1783 and an RA in 1785. PROVENANCE: Published in 'An History of the River Thames', by John and Josiah Boydell; William Combe. One of the grandest and most important books on the Thames. "although not the first coloured aquatint book, [it] was the first major one, and it was to set an example for the type of illustration that was to enjoy widespread popularity in England for some forty years" - Bruntjen (John Boydell 1719-1804). The Boydell brothers originally intended to include the rivers Thames, Severn, Forth and Clyde 'and intended to illustrate an original History of those Rivers, including all that adorns, dignifies or enriches them and their Vicinities, whether of Art or Nature'. However the project was abandoned at the completion of the History of the Thames.TYPE: Antique hand coloured aquatint printed on paper.
