James Wood, of Leeds, an Eloge to the Memory of John Wesley, and an Address to the Inhabitants of Bradford; with Diverting Incidents, Anecdotes, Bons Mots, &c.London: Printed for the Author. 1791. First edition.8vo in 4s. [4], 197, [3]p. Disbound. The last three pages are blank.Remains of a calf spine. Scattered foxing. Stab holes to the gutter.Despite it's title this is a pamphlet by the disgruntled schoolmaster Edward Baldwyn (1745-1817) attacking the clergyman John Crosse (1739-1816). Baldwyn seems to have got his nose out of joint when Crosse appointed another person to the post of lecturer, which was traditionally a post held by the schoolmaster. As a result Baldwyn published a series of pamphlets under the pseudonym Trim. This particular pamphlet appears to be a response to John Crosse's "A Letter to the Author of Remarks on Two of the Most Singular Characters of the Age", wherein Crosse defends himself, particularly against the accusation of fraud. The tone throughout is spiteful and rather unrelenting. This is not a man who forgives easily. Pages 167 to 197 are essentially an attack on Methodists. ESTC T45627.
