During the French Revolution, a constitutional bishop was a Catholic bishop elected from among the clergy who had sworn to uphold the Civil Constitution of the Clergy between 1791 and 1801. Constitutional bishops were often priests with less of more moderate Gallican and partisan ideas, of a less or moderate nature. They were elected locally by the same body of electors that elected the députés of the future Legislative Assembly. This scarce work includes a letter to the Pope by the clergy, one of which is the notable Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Gobel (1727-1794). On November 8, 1792, Gobel was appointed administrator of Paris. His public display of anti-clericalism was most likely a careful tactic to ensure the sympathy of politicians: among other things, he declared himself opposed to clerical celibacy. Gobel was imprisoned and found guilty of the so-called Luxembourg prison plot. All of the alleged conspirators were sentenced to death and guillotined that same afternoon. Incredibly scarce tracts on the Civil Constitutional of the Clergy. RAREF1791FSUQ01/24 - HK1069
