Description: Original 1788 copper plate engraving printed on heavy handlaid paper. size: approx 12.5” x 9.5” from "Tableau Encyclopedique et Methodique des Trois Regnes de la Nature", the volume on Ichtchyologie. This massive work was made by l'Abbe Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre, and published in Paris by Panckoucke in 1788. Abbe Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (1752-1804) was a French naturalist, a priest in the Rouergue, and a professor at the school of Rhodes. The publisher Panckouke employed him to contribute to this work, the “Tableau encyclopedique et methodique des trios regnes de la nature..., which was the largest encyclopedia of the enlightenment. It covered all aspects of the natural world, in the comprehensive mode that was very much the driving force of the era. Bonnaterre worked on the Natural History part of the encyclopedia in the areas of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and insects. He composed extensive text for the part on fish, and collected drawings from Bloch, Gronovius, Broussonet, Pennant and others, of more than 400 species. The Tableau encyclopédique et méthodique des trois regnes de la nature was an illustrated encyclopedia of plants, animals and minerals, notable for including the first scientific descriptions of many species, and for its attractive engravings. It was published in Paris by Charles Joseph Panckoucke, from 1788 on. His son Charles Louis Fleury Panckoucke continued in the writing and publishing business as well. Robert Benard (fl. 1750-1785) direxit. Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was a French philosopher, art critic and writer. Jean le Rond d'Alembert (1717-1783) was a French mathematician, mechanician, physicist and philosopher. Excellent condition
