Description: THIS ITEM IS A GENUINE ORIGINAL VINTAGE PRINT FROM THE SOURCE/DATE LISTED Name - Military and/or Marching-Band Maneuvers or Formations Date - 1771 Source - Diderot’s Encyclopedia, 1771 Printing of Recueil de Planches, Sur Les Sciences, et Les Arts Liberaux, et Les Arts Mechaniques, avec Leur Explication, Troisieme Edition, Tome Premier By - Edited by Denis Diderot Type - Hand-Laid paper, blank back Comment - In the first three figures of this plate the horses are represented by their perpendicular projection on the ground. We have been careful to observe their principal dimensions, that is to say, their length and width; In this manner they are, so to speak, represented as a bird's eye, and the execution of their different movements may be rendered much more sensible and distinct than if they were drawn as in the same Board. Fig. 67. Troop of cavalry on two rows AB & CD, to which one wants to make right or left by divisions of the front of the troop, to make the U turn to the right, or to walk towards this side or towards the left. Fig. 68. This figure shows the preceding troop, which has been made to the right by four cavaliers. The punctuated spaces represent those which the horses occupied before the movement. 69. This figure represents the same troop which, having made a second to the right, faces the tail. The spaces punctuated to the left express the ground that the troop loses on this side in the mid - turn to the right; It gains to the right another space of such an extent. 70. This Plate represents a squadron of fifty-six riders in front, composed of four companions of forty-two horsemen. The two companions of the right are marked on the right by half - company half - caracole; And the punctuated lines mark the motion which each half - squadron must make, in order that the whole squadron may turn on its center. The larger points mark the movement of the two companies of the Left, which are the usual characteristics, with the cage A serving as a pivot. The portions of a circle at smaller points, mark the path to be traveled by the riders at the ends of the other half of the squadron, so that rider B will arrive at point C, jumper D at point E, cava - bind F to point G; And that when the half-conversion is completed the interval between the line F B and the line A H will be found between the lines CG & A I.
