Brodhead was an American history scholar who transcribed a large quantity of documents relating to the early history of New York. Those documents were published as a 15 volume series "Documents Relating to the Colonial History of New York" between 1853-1883. It is considered the most important collection of primary documents on New York's colonial period. Octavo, xvi, 304 pages, period full leather with raised bands to spine. Compartments ornately lettered and decorated in gilt. Formerly in the library of Rutgers College (which Brodhead attended and was the trustee of from 1853 to 1873.) with their bookplate. Hinges cracked, damage and loss to top of front board, scuffs, rubbing and wear, leather on the rear board drying and cracking, foxing and discoloration, else in good condition.
