DATE PRINTED: 1775 (imprint of the publisher indicates a date between 1764 and 1793. Other library records suggest a date between 1776 and 1784.) SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 26.5 x 16.5 cm (10.5 x 6.5 inches) plus margins with a blank back (medium). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Published in 'Twelve prospects in that part of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, called the Peak and Moor Lands', by Carington Bowles (1724 - 1793) at his map warehouse, No 69 in St Paul's Church Yard, London. Carington Bowles worked as a publisher in partnership with his father John Bowles from about 1752 until 1763 before taking over his uncle's business. His only son Henry Carington carried on business after Carington's death under the name Bowles and Carver. This view first appeared in 1749 in Boydell's series of plates "Collection of One Hundred Views in England and Wales." , drawn and published by John Boydell (1719-1804) at the Globe near Durham Yard in the Strand. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Matlock Bath is a village and civil parish in Derbyshire, England. It lies in the Peak District, south of Matlock on the main A6 road, and approximately halfway between Buxton and Derby. Originally built at the head of a dead-end dirt road running alongside the valley of the River Derwent from Matlock itself, the locality developed in the 19th century as residential and a spa town and still thrives on tourism. Development was and is very restricted due to the steep hillsides, with the majority of buildings on one side of the valley with only footbridges across the river.
