Hollstein: Heinrich Holle, 1711. This is Vol 1 of what was issued in three volumes; this volume goes to the Old Testament books of Esther and Job, only. Full leather binding with four raised bands on the spine and debossed wreath detail on the front cover. Frontispiece illustration, decorative two-color title page and several large decorative initial caps at beginnings of sections. Very good condition, firmly bound, small piece of leather missing at bottom front corner of spine. 7.5x9x3.75 inches. Handsome. Weighs 6 pounds. A translation of the title page reads: Biblia Pentapla, that is: Books of Holy Scripture of the Old & New Testaments in five German versions: the Roman Catholic; the Evangelic Lutheran; the Evangelic Reformed; the Jewish Old Testament and New Testament; and the Holland Dutch Version. With different introductions and short summaries. Inscription in German on one of the endpapers indicates that the book was handed down through a family of German nobility. The translation of the inscription reads: “Alfred Count of Schlieffen received this book as a dear bequest from his beloved grandmother Louise von Schoenberg, Countess zu Stolberg Wermgerode. Countess Louise (1771-1856) was a member of the House of Stolberg from the Harz area of Germany. From 1797 to 1800 she was abbess of Drubeck Abbey, which she eventually left to marry. Alfred von Schlieffen (Alfred Graf von Schlieffen, 1833-1913) was the son of a Prussian general, a German officer and head of the general staff. He developed the Schlieffen Plan that the German armies used at the outbreak of World War I. A second inscription reads in translation: “There is only one salvation, which is found in His Word.”
