Octavo [6.75’’ tall x 4.25’’ wide]. ESTC ref. 006110400. Wing S2439. Collates [iv], 91, [20]p. First & only edition. A good, sound copy of this fairly uncommon work. No other copies located online currently. Minor marks, blemishes or reading wear commensurate with age else sound. Engraved portrait present. According to the note on ESTC the portrait appears to be rare. The note states ‘two libraries report frontis portrait’. Published posthumously – Selden had died in 1654. It is possible that the relaxed attitude to Christmas which the restoration brought in made this little tract possible. There are variants of this book. Many have a dedication leaf, addressing the book ‘to the learned gentry of the Inner Temple’ signed G.J. This appears to be have been deliberately cancelled in this copy. ESTC records a note confirming this stating ‘Variant: dedication leaf cancelled’. Bound in full contemporary English sheep. Spine rubbed with a little wear/leather loss to the lower part.
